I'm trying to filter emails to just send to my students (we have three types of users: students, adult volunteers, and alumni) and I can't seem to find the right way to get to just them without having to put in place multiple filters to "weed out" the other groups. The category question doesn't show up when I search through the user data. Any ideas?

To filter by Custom Questions, try using the User Filter User Data > User Extra > Category > In the field to the far right you'll enter in your answer like, Adult Volunteer. Example from my test site pictured below:
This will filter down the users on the email blast to only users who have responded with Adult Volunteer.
